General
Properoperation,drivingtechniquesandmaintenancearekeyfactorsinobtainingthe
maximumlifeandeconomyfromamodernturbochargeddieselengine.Thissection
hasoperationalinformationaboutthecomponentsthatmakeuptheengine.
Whenchanginggears,avoidluggingtoextendenginelife.Whentheengineis
operatingatfullthrottleandmaximumgovernedspeedcannotbereachedor
maintained,theengineislugging.Whenapproachingahillrequiringmorepower,
itisnecessarytodownshiftthetransmissionasthevehiclegoesintothegrade.
Acceleratingtothegovernedenginespeedwillgiveadditionalpoweratapproximately
thesameroadspeed.Forshiftinginstructions,seethetransmissionmanufacturer’s
operator’smanual.
Alwaysstartmovingtheloadinagearlowenoughsothattheenginecanbe
acceleratedtothegovernedspeed.Thenshifttothenextgearastheengine
decelerates.Forloadedvehicles,donotskipagearorlugtheenginewhilegettingup
tocruisingspeed.Foremptyorlightloads,itispermissibletoskipgears.
Whenoperatingonalevelhighwayoratcruisingspeed,holdtheenginespeedat
approximately1400to1600rpmforlargedisplacementenginestoachievepowerand
economicalfuelconsumption.
Theoperatorshouldunderstandtheoperatingcharacteristicsoftheenginethevehicle
isequippedwith.Moderndieselengineshavemaximumtorquesatmuchlower
enginespeedsthaninthepast.Assuch,theseenginesaredesignedtoperform
satisfactorilyatalowerspeed.Newtransmissionswithwideratiostepsbetween
gearsdemandtheuseoftheseengines.
